Future Dusk – an otherworldly shade of purply blue – has been crowned the top color for 2025 by trend agency WGSN and Coloro. This bewitching color includes numerous shades which have already been spotted in trendsetting interiors. Mauve and plum were seen throughout the fifth edition (2024) of the Kips Bay Dallas Decorator Show House where almost all the 23 designer rooms included vintage Oriental rugs. WGSN believes Future Dusk aligns with “themes of moving from darkness to light”, but we believe it’s a color that encourages us to transition into a comfortable zone of dusky darkness where we can feel safe in our cozy retreats. Whether you want to audition Future Dusk in one room or your whole home, read on to discover one of the delightful aesthetics that allies with the color, and how vintage and antique Oriental and Persian rugs anchor the look.
We love Wednesday Addams, but her full-on dark gothcore will overwhelm most interiors. Instead, we recommend whimsigoth as the perfect aesthetic for Future Dusk. Whimsigoth inspired interiors rely on a moody palette, but enliven it with plants and lighter fabrics. Whimsigoth’s purply colors, lightness, and whimsy are the interior design equivalent of Filipino Ube bread – sweet purple yam jam often swirled through a milky white crumb. A delicious edible example of moody merged with lightness.
In July 2024 Better Homes & Gardens magazine advised readers to “prepare your home” with a “bewitching aesthetic” in anticipation of the sequel to the movie “Practical Magic”. Scheduled for release in 2025, one of the stars of the original is the Victorian house where the witches live. Texture and moody colors seen throughout the interior are offset by doses of white. The stairs are white, kitchen cabinetry is white, the greenhouse where witchy potions are stirred is white as is the exterior of this magical house. One of the key “moody” design choices in the house are gently faded Oriental and Persian rugs that cover hardwood floors in almost all the rooms. Creamy white, Oriental rugs and other furnishings in “Practical Magic” create an exceptional example of whimsigoth. We can easily imagine many of our rugs, including our mysterious mauve old Persian Hamadan wool runner gracing rooms in the “Practical Magic” sequel.
Heather Goerzen, design editor at Havenly recently commented that “. . . whimsigoth is “Practical Magic”, while design consultant Kristen Bentrup says embracing whimsigoth style strongly appeals to “a new and younger audience who add their own spin to it.” The dream house in “Practical Magic” may not be real, but the fever dream it inspires for the magic we can create in our homes is real and growing. Choose shades related to Future Dusk, greenery, lightness (don’t forget a slice of Ube bread and a cup of tea), plus must-have antique or vintage Oriental rugs, and you’ll be well on your way to creating a practical and magical interior.
